Almaty

Actually a taxi should have waited for me at the airport to bring me directly to the hotel. Maybe I could have been able to sleep a few hours. But no driver was waving a cardboard sign with my name on it. I graciously waited another quarter of an hour, but when I was almost the last passenger at the Almaty’s airport, I decided to do it my way.

I deliberately avoid the local “taxi mafia”, because beforehand I of course did not research what it would cost for the about 20 kilometre ride to the hotel. But luckily there was a bus service. Problem: With my freshly drew out 5,000 Tenge bill (around 25 Euro), paying at the ticket machine was impossible. The fare was, same as in the local metro or tram, 80 Tenge. Plus only coins were accepted.

The driver, who first lit a cigarette signalling that he would not immediately drive back to the city, pointed to the airport building, where I could change my money. I took my luggage again and went to the only money exchange. There I briefly outlined my problem to the lady. She smiled and immediately understood my misery, as I mentioned the code word “avtobus”.

Back in the bus, I threw my new coins into the throat of the machine. At one side it spit the ticket, at another the change. I took a seat in the empty bus, could then start the trip. A little later, the engine was already running, a second passenger was crashing in the bus. Presumably also not a local. The man asked me how the ticket machine works and I proudly told him how. Thus, I arrived in Almaty!

Almaty

For a week I stayed in the largest city of Kazakhstan. Until 1997 Almaty was the capital of the vast Central Asian country. Then the first and so far last President Nursultan Nazarbayev decided to relocate the capital to Astana, in the heartland.

The time in Almaty was not to relax: I participated in the seventh edition of the “Central Asian Media Workshop”. It was organized by the local Goethe Institute, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the German Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations . Together with participants from other Central Asian countries (except Turkmenistan), we developed ideas for articles within five, researched them and produced the texts including photos until the end of the week.

Despite the very tight time schedule, many different topics were covered, like corruption at the universities, a photo reportage about shops in discarded shipping containers or a story about the legendary kind of apple “Aport” . Last but not least, the workshop provided chances to get to know each other and an exchange among the participants. Already the few days in the green city with its panoramic views at snow-capped mountains arouse my interest for more of Central Asia!
