Focusing on self-improvement instead of politics

Ako

Ako is standing here on the famous Erbil citadel viewing down on the Kurdish capital’s central square. He works as a lawyer for a big Western oil and gas company and wants to do his master’s degree soon. In January 2020, he told me about hearing missiles exploding, which Iran had shot to an American military base nearby as retaliation for the US assassination of general Sulaimani. He is tired of politics and religion and prefers to focus on his personal development. Ako likes the United States a lot and would love to go there. He was very keen on improving his English when I met him in 2017 and believes in working hard, making money, and optimising himself. He was also helping me to get a Sim card and find my way round the impressive central Bazar, being a good example of that famed Kurdish hospitality.
