Keeping a Kalashnikov at your house, just in case

Yazidi with Kalashnikov

This Yazidi refugee from the Sinjar region presented his family’s Kalashnikov, taken out of a hiding place in a corner of their little hut. He said that they kept it because they would maybe need it again in the future to defend themselves. Looking at the history of persecution and terror the Yazidi people had to go through the past decades, this lack of optimism seems understandable. ISIS invaded his family’s home region of Sinjar in August 2014, systematically killing thousands of Yazidis. This young man’s family was lucky enough to escape to Sharya near Dohuk which remained under the control of Kurdish Peshmerga forces. His family have settled there together with other Yazidi refugees in a run-down district. (2017)
